How to Slipstream a Service Pack into a Windows OS Install CD

To slipstream a Service Pack into a Windows OS Install means taking a Service Pack installer and applying it to the Windows Install Files so that the Windows Install is now pre-loaded with the Service Pack. This means that you will no longer need to install that service pack after installing the OS. It also means that Windows will take less disk space and be much cleaner because there will not be any backup files, etc.

This document will describe the process of slipstreaming a Service Pack into the Windows XP or Windows 2003 Install.

This document will describe the four steps to slipstreaming a Windows Install:

Copy the install files from the CD-ROM to your Hard Drive
Download and extract the Service Pack
Apply the Service Pack to the install files
Optionally, make a Bootable CD with the Slipstreamed Windows Install

We will specifically be creating a slipstreamed Windows Server 2003 x86 Service Pack 2 install. To slipstream another service pack or OS, you will merely need to substitute the service pack file and appropriate source CD for the ones mentioned. For reference, here are the Service Packs released to date and their filenames.

Step 1: Copy the install files from the CD-ROM to your Hard Drive

In order to update the install files, they will need to be in a writable location. You can use any location you want, but this document will demonstrate the Slipstream Installation using the directory C:\TempOS.

Create a Temporary Directory on your hard drive, we will call it C:\TempOS
Copy the contents of your Windows Install CD to the C:\TempOS

Step 2: Download and extract the Service Pack

By default, the Service Pack executable will attempt to install the service pack to your operating system. To work with the service pack in other ways, such as using it to slipstream an OS install, you will need to extract the contents of the Service Pack installer to a temporary directory. We will use the directory "C:\TempSP".

Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
Search for the Network Install version of the Service Pack you want to apply.
1. If the file size is less than 5MB, then it is probably not the Network Install version.
2. If you are searching for one of the Service Packs listed at the beginning of this document, you can save some time by searching for the file name.
Download the Service Pack to a location on your hard drive, such as C:\
Click Start>Run, type "C:\WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU.exe -x:C:\TempSP" (without quotes), and press Enter. This will extract the contents of the file.

When the extraction is complete, click OK.

Step 3: Apply the Service Pack to the install files

Now that the OS Install files are in a writeable location and the Service Pack install files have been extracted, we can now instruct the Service Pack installer to slipstream your OS Install files.

Click Start>Run, type "C:\TempSP\i386\update\update.exe -s:C:\TempOS" (without quotes), and press Enter. This will integrate the Service Pack files into the Windows Install files.

When the integration is complete, click OK.
You can now copy the install files to any location you like. You can use it for unattended installs or to supply the HAL files during the HII Tools setup.
If you would like to make a Bootable Install CD, follow the instructions in the next step.

Step 4: Optionally, make a Bootable CD with the Slipstreamed Windows Install

If you were to burn the slipstreamed OS Install files to a CD right now, the CD would not be a bootable CD and so it would not be very useful. In order to make a bootable CD, we will need to extract the boot image from your original OS Install CD and burn the new files to a CD using that boot image. In the end, you will have a full-featured bootable OS Install CD that has the latest Service Pack built-in.

Download and install IsoBuster. You can download it from http://www.isobuster.com/
Open IsoBuster.
Make sure your Windows Install CD is in the drive.
In the drop-down list, choose the CD drive that the install CD is in.
In the tree-view, select "Bootable Disk"
In the right pane, right-click the .img file (it will probably be called "Microsoft Corporation.img") and select Extract.
Save it to a location on your hard drive, such as C:\.
If you do not have CD burning application that will allow you to create a bootable CD using the .img file you just extracted, download and install ISO Recorder from http://isorecorder.alexfeinman.com.
Burn your C:\TempOS directory to CD using the "Microsoft Corporation.img" file to make it bootable. If you are using ISO Recorder, do the following.
1. Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C: drive.
2. Right-click TempOS and select "Create ISO image file"
3. Under Boot Image, make sure that the Include option is enabled.
4. Under Boot Image, click the browse (" ") button and select the "Microsoft Corporation.img" file.

5. Click Next.
6. When the TempOS.iso file has successfully been created click Finish, you can now burn it to a CD.
7. Insert a blank writeable CD into your CD Burner.
8. In Windows Explorer, browse to C:\, right-click the TempOS.iso file, and select "Copy image to CD".
9. In the Recorder drop-down list, select your CD Burner and then click Next.
10. When the CD recording is complete, click Finish.
You now have a bootable OS Install with the latest Service Pack built-in.
You will probably want to delete all or some of the temporary files placed on your hard drive. Here is a list of the temporary files and folders created during this process that you may want to delete or move to a network share for later use.
1. "C:\TempOS", the slipstreamed OS Install files.
2. "C:\WindowsServer2003-KB914961-SP2-x86-ENU.exe", the Service Pack installer.
3. "C:\TempSP", the extracted Service Pack Install files.
4. "C:\TempOS.iso", the bootable CD image file of the slipstreamed OS Install.

The Klein bottle can not be embedded in three-space, but it can be immersed there.

That digital picture frame on your desk is looking a little bulkier this morning. Kodak just announced a new kind of frame that uses an OLED (organic light-emitting diode) screen instead of an LCD. OLEDs, as anyone knows, are much thinner than the LCD panels that are typically used in frames, since they don't need a backlight. The 7.6-inch Kodak frame also has a sensor that adjusts the brightness of the screen to match the ambient light, and you get the vivid color that OLEDs are known for.

Hi ho, it doesn't stop there. The frame has Wi-Fi built in, able to connect your home network to access photos on your PC or the Internet. Sweet! If you can e-mail pics right to the frame — like that one from eStarling — we're sold. It has 2GB of memory onboard to store media.

While digital frames still have a lot of problems to overcome if they're ever going to shake their reputation of tacky commodity gadgets, this Kodak OLED frame represents progress, and we're all for that. Is it $999 (the retail price of progress? What the hell — you've got to start somewhere.

Badass as they are, military snipers are sometimes humbled by heat haze, which can make a clear target look like murky soup. If the boys at DARPA have their way, though, a new kind of sniper scope could turn that haze problem into a hot benefit.

The Super-Resolution Vision System (SRVS) works like this: for fleeting moments, heat haze actually works as a kind of super lens, sharpening and magnifying the object on the other side of it. The SRVS watches for areas of the image that are experiencing this kind of lensing, discarding the rest and assembling a complete picture as it scans the area from moment to moment. The sniper’s eyeball sees only a clear picture, one that’s no longer restricted to the diffraction limit inherent to the scope itself.

An SVRS prototype should be ready by next year, with production units getting to Special Ops units by 2011 — possibly too late to see any real action in Iraq. But if the Super Scope, like other military technologies like GPS before it, eventually trickles down to civilian use, expect to someday see some amazing Discovery Channel specials about animal mating habits in the desert.

AQUA - AQUARIUS (2000)

On Aquarium, Aqua were "Barbie Girls"; now they're "Cartoon Heroes." A slight change in context for their second album, but, essentially, it's business as usual. And let's not forget that Aqua do this slapstick kiddie-pop thing with a lot more panache than their shamelessly novelty Euro-goons peers. The relentless zaniness of Aquarius may sometimes be cloying, especially those too-chirpy chipmunk voices on "Cartoon Heroes," but there's no denying that this is a pop group that really lives this pop lark--shaved-headed frontman Rene really does talk in that comedy growl and frontwoman Lene really doesn't wear more than a stretched scrap of PVC whenever she leaves the house. This makes Aquarius quite likeable, actually--especially on the slapstick-trance workout of "Around the World," which even manages to squeeze in a brief geography lesson.

The KingdomThe movie explores conflict in the Middle East, specifically Saudi Arabia. It is loosely based on the true life events of an investigation by the FBI into a 1996 terrorist attack on the Khobar Towers in Dhahran. The Kingdom begins with an attack on a housing compound for US citizens working in Riyadh. During this attack, an FBI agent is killed along with hundreds of other US citizens, including women and children. The attack prompts an investigation by the FBI who sends a special team to investigate the bombing and catch the people responsible. While in Riyadh, the team is faced with obstacles caused by cultural differences as well as other things. The FBI team has only five days to complete their mission and must quickly overcome all obstacles, as they themselves become the main target of the terrorist cell responsible for the bombing. This movie gives an insight on both sides of the coin of what terrorism does to the countries, the communities and families involved.

That formula worked for Little Miss Sunshine, a frequently hilarious study of family dysfunction. Meet the Hoovers, an Albuquerque clan riddled with depression, hostility, and the tattered remnants of the American Dream; despite their flakiness, they manage to pile into a VW van for a weekend trek to L.A. in order to get moppet daughter Olive (Abigail Breslin) into the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. Much of the pleasure of this journey comes from watching some skillful comic actors doing their thing: Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette as the parents (he's hoping to become a self-help authority), Alan Arkin as a grandfather all too willing to give uproariously inappropriate advice to a sullen teenage grandson (Paul Dano), and a subdued Steve Carell as a jilted gay professor on the verge of suicide. The film is a crowd-pleaser, and if anything is a little too eager to bend itself in the direction of quirk-loving Sundance audiences; it can feel forced. But the breezy momentum and the ingenious actors help push the material over any bumps in the road.

A spin-off rather than a sequel, Band Camp is the fourth entry in the American Pie franchise, but the first without the original cast. Instead a new trash-talking teen takes the lead. His name is Matt (Tad Hilgenbrinck) and he's Steve Stifler's younger brother (and despite the dark hair, Hilgenbrinck does resemble Seann William Scott--without the impish charm). There's nothing the football playing party boy hates more than bandies, the geeky members of the high school band. After he gets caught "punking" his favorite victims, he's sent to the guidance counselor, a redheaded gent known as the Sherminator (Chris Owen), who recommends band camp as penance. Since Steve has moved on to become a Girls Gone Wild impresario, Matt decides he'll make his own R-rated opus, "Bandies Gone Wild." This means spying on the well endowed camp counselors and other unwitting campers while they're showering, sunbathing, etc. When the not-so-bright triangle player gets caught yet again, his new friends abandon him, leading Stiffmeister Jr. to believe he just may have gone too far.
